CHAPTER SIX

LOCKING the door of the downstairs cloakroom behind her, Cassie leant against it and took a deep, ragged breath, willing her shaking legs not to subside beneath her. She’d never in her life struck another human being, had never before felt so close to losing complete control of herself. But then she’d never encountered such a loathsome, despicable... Her hands closed into fists, the nails digging into her palms. She hated him. Hated him with every fibre in her being. ‘I could take you to bed right now if I chose...’ Oh, God. She pressed her hands to her face, closing her eyes, trying to obliterate the taunting words, the scornful, contemptuous face from her mind.

Adam’s kiss had been executed purely out of anger—he might just as easily have released his feelings by shaking her by the scruff of her neck. And she hadn’t even tried to resist, had responded with a fierce, wanton abandonment that had not only shocked but terrified her. She must have been insane...how could she...? She groaned out loud. And now he thought she was a pushover.

So what? Her small chin squared resolutely. Who the hell cared what Professor Adam Merrick thought? His opinion was worthless. She was damned if she was going to torture herself with pointless recriminations over what, when all was said and done, had merely been a kiss. And regardless of her response, he had been the one to instigate it. Her eyes sparked. The arrogance, the gall, the unbelievable conceit of the man... How dared he insinuate that if it hadn’t been for his disinclination they would have ended up in bed together? Was that how his sordid little mind worked? One kiss...next stop bed...

She moved towards the basin and tensed with renewed horror as she caught sight of her reflection in the mirror. Her eyes were over-bright, her lower lip swollen, but it was her body’s humiliating betrayal that made her shudder with self-revulsion. Her swollen breasts, the nipples taut and engorged, were thrust uninhibitedly against the soft fabric of her sweatshirt. Her throat constricted. Is that how she’d looked when...? So...so wanton? Eager. Willing.

Swallowing hard, she averted her gaze and bending over the white porcelain basin splashed warm water on to her face. She felt physically and emotionally drained, battered inside, couldn’t even think straight any more. She just wanted to escape from this house, escape from Adam Merrick, ached for the warm, safe sanctuary of Mead Cottage.

She dabbed her face dry with a towel. The temptation simply to jump in the car and go was overwhelming... No! She refused to take that weak, coward’s course. Pride and the restoration of her self-respect demanded that she faced him again. Faced him with a cool, calm indifference. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of slinking away.

Gritting her teeth, she unlocked the door and tensed as she heard footsteps in the hall, relief swamping her as she identified the two separate treads, the lighter one easily recognisable as William’s. She wouldn’t have to face Adam on his own.
